Thanksgiving. Black Friday. Cyber Monday

Saya lupa la nak cerita serba sikit pasal Thanksgiving kat entry tu. Meh kita tengok apa kata Wiki:

Thanksgiving Day is a harvest festival celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. Traditionally, it has been a time to give thanks for a bountiful harvest. While there was an underlying religious element in the original celebration, Thanksgiving today is primarily identified as a secular holiday.[1]

Although earlier feasts are known to have taken place, Thanksgiving as it is known and celebrated today derives from a joint celebration between the Pilgrim settlers of Plymouth, Massachusetts and members of the Native American Patuxet tribe of the Wampanoag people in 1621.

In Canada, Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the second Monday in October, which is Columbus Day in the United States. In the United States, it falls on the fourth Thursday of November. [source]

Dasar jakun :p.

Black Friday tu apa pulak? Jumaat yang hitam kelam?? Hehe. Tahun lepas la pertama kali saya dengar istilah Black Friday. Ingatkan apa benda la Black Friday tu...rupanya hari untuk shopping. Sale memang menggila la sempena Black Friday. Bayangkan, orang sanggup beratur kat luar kedai 4-5 jam sebelum kedai dibuka! First come, first serve la kata orang sekarang.

Kedai dah nak buka baru diorang pergi, jadinya takde la lama sangat kena beratur tapi dalam suhu yang sejuk macam sekarang ni...15 minit tu pun terseksa jadinya! Masa suami saya pergi tu, suhu -8'C. Nak merasa bahang Black Friday punya pasal...suhu negatif pun tak menjadi penghalang :p.

Kedai yang suami saya pergi tu dibuka (sale bermula) pada jam 12 tengah malam tapi kebanyakan kedai (kalau tak silap saya) dibuka pada jam 4-5 pagi. Tak spesifik masanya. Kat kedai tu (yang suami saya pergi tu la), every item is 50% off! Mana la orang tak jadi 'gila' kalau macam tu punya diskaun. Oh, suami saya kena beratur lebih sejam masa nak buat bayaran! Masa nak masuk kedai tak beratur lama, nak bayar pulak jadi lama.

Black Friday ni jugak sebenarnya ada kaitan dengan Thanksgiving Day...

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Especially popular in the United States, the event is spreading to other nations such as Canada and Australia. On this day, many retailers open very early, often at 4 a.m., or earlier, and offer promotional sales to kick off the shopping season. Black Friday is not actually a holiday, but many employers give their employees the day off, increasing the number of potential shoppers. It has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005,[1] although news reports, which at that time were inaccurate,[2] have described it as the busiest shopping day of the year for a much longer period of time.[3]

The day's name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. Use of the term began by 1966 and began to see broader use outside Philadelphia around 1975. Later an alternative explanation began to be offered: that "Black Friday" indicates the period during which retailers are turning a profit, or "in the black."[4] [source]

Ingat Thanksgiving Day, ingat Black Friday..eheh. Thanksgiving Day jatuh hari Khamis ke-4 bulan November. Jadinya, Jumaat keesokannya la Black Friday. Masa kami di rumah Dr.Brewer tu, ramai la yang duk sembang pasal Black Friday. Orang bukan sembang sangat pasal Thanksgiving Day, tapi Black Friday yang lebihnya :p.

1 lagi istilah...Cyber Monday. Kalau Thanksgiving hari Khamis, Black Friday Jumaat keesokan harinya...Cyber Monday pulak Isnin berikutnya.

Ada kaitan dengan shopping jugak! Bezanya, Cyber Monday ni online shopping. Tak payah la nak bersengkang mata, beratur panjang, berkhemah dan berebut-rebut semata-mata nak shopping macam Black Friday. Tapi istilah Black Friday lagi glamor berbanding Cyber Monday. Saya sendiri pun baru tahun ni dengar pasal Cyber Monday. Lagipun harga sale masa Cyber Monday tak seruntuh harga sale masa Black Friday.

Cyber Monday is a marketing term for the Monday immediately following Black Friday, the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, created by companies to persuade people to shop online. The term made its debut on November 28, 2005 in a Shop.org press release entitled "'Cyber Monday' Quickly Becoming One of the Biggest Online Shopping Days of the Year".[1] According to the Shop.org/BizRate Research 2005 eHoliday Mood Study, "77 percent of online retailers said that their sales increased substantially last year on the Monday after Thanksgiving, a trend that is driving serious online discounts and promotions on Cyber Monday this year (2005)". In 2006, Shop.org announced[2] that it launched the CyberMonday.com portal, a one-stop shop for Cyber Monday deals. In 2009, comScore[3] reported that consumers spent $887M online on Cyber Monday (excluding travel), the second highest spending day of 2009. Cyber Monday is also used as a marketing term in Canada, the United Kingdom, Portugal and Germany. In these countries, with the exception of Canada, Cyber Monday sales last for eight days, typically from the last Monday in November to the first Monday in December. In Canada, the sales period mirrors that of the U.S. [source]
